France, officially the French Republic, is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France, called Metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. Overseas France include several island territories in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. France has a total population of 66.7 million, and its capital is Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial center.

History

France has a long and complicated history. It has been through many changes, and has been a part of many different empires. France was first settled by the Celts, and later became a part of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, France was ruled by the Franks. The Franks were a Germanic people, and France gets its name from them. France later became a part of the Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire was a group of countries that were all ruled by the same person, the Holy Roman Emperor. France became its own country in the late 1700s, and has been a republic since the 1800s.
