Japanese

Japan is an island country in East Asia. It is bordered by the Sea of Japan to the west, and it extends from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The kanji that make up Japan's name mean "sun origin", and it is often called the "Land of the Rising Sun". Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the largest city is Osaka.

History

The first recorded use of the word “Japan” is in the Chinese history book, the Records of the Three Kingdoms. The book tells the story of the Han dynasty, which ruled China from 206 BC to 220 AD. In the book, a Chinese emperor is said to have sent a letter to the emperor of Japan. The letter said, “I hereby dispatch to you, the emperor of Wa, a letter and a gold seal.” The word “Wa” is the Chinese name for Japan.
