World War I

World War I, also known as the First World War, was a global war that lasted from 1914 to 1918. The war began in Europe, and eventually involved more than 70 million soldiers from more than 60 different countries. More than 9 million soldiers were killed, and more than 21 million were wounded. The war also resulted in the destruction of many cities and towns.

Causes

The main causes of World War I were nationalism, imperialism, and militarism. Nationalism was a big part of World War I because it was what started the war. Nationalism is when people are very proud of their country and think that it is better than any other country. This led to countries like Germany and Austria-Hungary to want to prove that they were the best. Imperialism is when a country takes over another country or territory. This led to countries like Britain and France to want to take over other countries. Militarism is when a country builds up its army and navy. This led to countries like Russia and Germany to want to have a bigger army than any other country.

Course

The course of World War I was largely determined by the initial clash of armies. The first battles were fought in the West, where the Allies were able to take advantage of their superior numbers. The Central Powers, meanwhile, had to contend with the addition of Russia to the Allied side. In the East, the war was fought largely on the Russian front, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire battled Russia for control of territory. The war in the West eventually bogged down into a stalemate, as both sides dug trenches and engaged in a war of attrition. In the East, the war continued to rage, with the Russians eventually being forced to withdraw. This opened up the possibility for the Central Powers to advance into Russia, which they did in 1917. This, in turn, led to the United States entering the war on the side of the Allies. The course of the war then shifted back to the West, where the Allies were finally able to break through the German lines and force them to surrender.
